A great coffee travel mug is a necessity when you need to go somewhere with your coffee, tea or hot chocolate. There are a great variety of travel mugs available, but you should consider these tips before your big purchase. Coffee mugs designed for travel are usually stainless steel or plastic, but I have seen rather adorable ceramic travel mugs as well. Plastic is by far the cheapest of the three.
While the stainless steel variety will cost you a pretty penny in the beginning, they will by far be the best option in the long scheme of things. The reason being is that plastic coffee travel mugs will break easier and not keep your beverages hot or cold (as the case may be) for as long as the stainless steel coffee mug.
Your hot chocolate, coffee and tea will stay hot in your stainless steel mug for approximately a half hour to a hour. Make sure you find one that is double insulated for best results. A stainless steel coffee mug is easier to wash than a plastic mug. Besides, plastic ones will absorb the liquids it holds and eventually make all your drinks taste as if they are mixed with each other.
If I have not convinced you yet and you still prefer a plastic coffee mug, then at least buy one that has an inner wall made of stainless steel. This just may be the "bee's knees" because the plastic outside will never be too hot or cold to grasp and the inside will maintain the desired temperature.
You may also want to consider the preferences of having your mug fit in your cup holder or having one with a large round bottom used for stabilization. A travel mug that sits in your holder is a great option for long drives because it leaves you with both hands free or you could have one with a wide bottom that is perfect for sitting on a flat surface. If you choose the wide bottomed mug make sure you buy one that is non-slip. It would be dangerous if your mug slipped off the surface it was sitting on!
The next consideration would be your travel mug lid. There are two types of lids: the snap on variety and the screw on type. Screw lids are the best safety option because once on they are not coming off. The plastic lids have the potential of coming off if they are tipped over or dropped. You might also want to think about the drinking hole and if you prefer one that is covered, not covered, one that slides over for you to drink or one that flips up.
It does not matter what your choices are because they are you choices alone unless the travel mug is being purchased for gift, then it would be wise to consider their tastes. Find your perfect mug at retailers nationwide or on the Internet.
